Welcome, Mr. Zimmerman

Oh, it’s a hotly debated issue in the touring cyclist world. Panniers vs. trailer. It’s the Mac vs. PC. The Cats vs. Dogs. But I don’t care. I made a decision and this is it. This lil’ Bob Yak trailer, whom I have christened Zimmerman, can carry 70lbs if needed. I am actually trying to keep the load down to around 50lbs or less. Now, you might be saying to yourself: “But Janeen, you’re not leaving until May. Why did you get this so soon?” That’s a very astute observation. The answer is because I would like to do some …

SUFFERFESTIVUS TIME

In August 2009 I layered up for a chilly winter’s ride in Melbourne, Australia. After fueling up on coffee, I trudged downstairs to the garage to inspect my friend’s loaner bike. Amelia’s bike was what a second-hand store would call Vintage with a capital V. If they’d ever ridden it, they would perhaps consider changing it to “death trap” and like me, yearn to throw it in the river with a mighty heave-ho. But I’m skipping ahead. At that moment standing there in that cold garage, it was perfect. The only thing that really stood out to me was the …

Kickstart my heart

Today, I launched my first ever Kickstarter project. Kind of exciting. Will it be successful? Will it actually help me write my book if it is successful? (I’m definitely compelled to write if I know people are waiting on stuff!) Will people just laugh at my craziness and how I think Precious is a real live boy? Time will tell. Ninety days of time, in fact. That’s how long I have to raise the funds. Check out the project description to see how I plan to use the money. I tried to keep all the rewards kind of small, hoping …

It is about the bike.

A STORY OF ATTRACTION I’ve already posted a couple of pictures of the sexy, handsome and enigmatic Precious, but I’ve not yet explained how we ended up marrying our fortunes together. Precious and I are now a force to be reckoned with. This is no brief fling, no Vegas mistake with annulment looming. We are in this for the long haul. We were simply meant to be. When I first got the idea of doing the Transamerica tour, I never really thought I’d be ponying up for a bike that cost more than, I dunno, a grand maybe? So how …

One year in cycling

I made this 20×30 inch poster as a sort of celebration (actual size version to explore here). One year of my life, from November 16th, 2008 to November 15, 2009 (my birthday). One year of partnership with my road bike. It should be noted that prior to buying Baby, I rode a bike perhaps 5 to 10 times a year. If that. So this was quite a jump in mileage for me. Quite a jump in focus. Quite a change in lifestyle. I can’t tell you why I’ve become so enamored with cycling, all I can say is that is …

Meet Precious

Well, I’m now the proud owner of a modified 2010 Specialized Tricross Comp. Modified in the sense that I had the wheels switched out to more hard-wearing touring wheels for my planned trip across these great United States. I also had it converted to a triple, to tackle what I’m sure is going to be just hours of fun on the Appalachians! And the Rockies! When I add the TransAmerica section to this site (still working on it), I’ll give a rundown of everything this bike is and can be. At the moment, I’m cranking around on it in some …
