Day 5 & 6: TransAmerica 2 point oh.

on
August 2, 2010

NOTE: This is actually two days—the ride out to the crash site and the official Day 1. Picking up where I left off, then stitching it where I would’ve started on Day 5 if I hadn’t ended up in a ditch.

If I’m going to do one thing differently this time, it’s this: I’m not gonna crash. 🙂

On Friday, I went out to the crash site. Just ol’ Precious and I, leaving Mr. Zimmerman (the trailer) sulking in the hotel room. I just wanted to take my time and go at an easy pace and not be weighed down by full touring regalia. Plus, it was an 82-mile round trip, which would’ve been a hell of a day back at it!

Long story short—we noodled out there and I got sunburnt and stood at the side of the road where it happened and felt, well, embarrassed. Part of me still can’t believe I crashed. That this is the situation I’m in. Back at it. Again.

But that’s the way the cracker disintegrates.

Today was the real Day 1. Although slow and not very big in terms of mileage, just a taste of what’s to come really. I think the video above says enough, but it was a really nice day where I sweated, groaned along in my granny gear, was rained on, and enjoyed the great humidity thanks to the clouds keeping a real lid on the day. My least favorite hill occurred right at the end—the climb up to the Cookie Lady’s house. Kinda makes you all the more grateful to get there.

Today was also a shared experience, and for that, I am truly grateful. Thanks to Adam, who came out to ride with me and make sure I didn’t have an attack of the freak-outs. I have to admit, I’m very, very squeamish about downhills. A little afraid to brake. I’ll get over it, I guess. I have 60-odd days to work this out. Anyway, Adam: You, Sir, are a good egg.

Ride on!

PS: I need to include the twitter address for Precious in the video, but it takes too long to update on a slow connection, so I’ll have to do it later. Anyhoo, he’s at @yesiamprecious.

Super impressed to see you back at it. Seems like a fast recovery! I’m looking forward to following the trip.

I also stole a page from your book and rode to Stony Point and back from Carroll Gardens yesterday. Unfortunately I topped out at 97.8 miles and by the time I got home, pizza sounded better than a ride to park slope and back just to tick off 100. But thanks for the recommendation via your stellar videos- it was a great ride!
