DON’T PAnIC! These photos are 13 years old. I did not crash today. But we did just pass the 13 year anniversary of this How the Day Started pic 1 (day 4 of my “I don’t know if I told you this but I rode across America” trip) vs. How the Day Ended pic 2. May 19, 2010. I’m pretty concussed in the photo, so much so that I posted it to my feed before I actually called my Dad to let him know I’d had a little boo-boo. And yes, he saw it. And no, I don’t think he’s ever forgiven me.

Oh, and how stubborn am I? Ten weeks later, arm out of cast, I went right back to the spot where I crashed and kicked off again. I haven’t changed much.

While this is from the Behind the Streams video for last week’s post on Mothers, I thought I’d make a Speed Poetry Explainer (of sorts) and put it out there.

Speed Poetry Guidelines
1. Set timer for ten minutes (I accidentally say 5 in the video - whoops!)
2. Get your word prompt (there are sites that will generate random word for you)
3. Fill page as fast as you can.
4. Hit end timer when you finish last line on page.
5. Be Prepared: Results may vary

I did this for a full year in 2019. The poem read here, “Fossil” was written in 6 minutes and 38 seconds. Of the 365 I wrote, there are about 30 that could move to the next phase. I’m thinking about reviving this project with some kind of live component for subscribers of The Stream maybe? (As always, link in bio) Not sure. All I know is that in 2019, my brain was on fire and I’d like to get back to that freewheeling words pouring out unchecked method in some form.

Like I said though: Results may vary.

Frowny Face was a complete thing when I rode throu

Frowny Face was a complete thing when I rode through the road closed barrier on Old Santa Cruz Hwy on Sunday. (And the pavement, drippy as it was, did go up to the barrier too) Today… the frown appears to be slipping deeper ☹️into a funk it cannot come back from.

A photo of my Mum with her Mum for Mother’s Day. These ladies are gone now, but a flash and I can hear them both in my brain.

I hear my Mum say “You look pale” which used to drive me crazy but now makes me laugh. Yesterday, my brother and I were trying to figure out her secret for the white sauce for roast corned beef. This has nothing to do with being pale (she always said I could fix this by wearing makeup “Why won’t you wear make up!?”) but we’re always kicking ourselves about not getting any of her recipes written down. Nothing tastes quite the same as hers. What a wizard!

Nan. I hear my Nan say “Go-on, let her have it” which was grandmother talk for extra dessert for Janeen. Parfait! Yay! The “go-on” didn’t always lead to dessert. Go on…. get under the shearing shed with this shovel and bag and get me manure for my garden. Go on… these hot curlers will make you look pretty for your school photo. Grandmothers, amirite?! (But mostly the parfait one)

Also, go on. You can’t help but admire the rockin’ style in this photo. Those hats are incredible. Nan’s little belt thing. Mum’s gloves. I wonder where this was taken?

Anyway. Happy Mother’s Day to all. Kiss yours, remember yours, and if you are one yourself, you’re doing great. If it’s a day that makes you sad or grumpy or whatever complex emotion it brings up, sit in the feeling, but not for too long. Then eat a crumpet and have a nice cup of tea.

What does 5 AM “holy shit my trusty 10-year old

What does 5 AM “holy shit my trusty 10-year old Niterider headlight won’t turn on but I want to leave now” panic look like? This. It looks like this. I bought this light in Singapore over 20 years ago. The mount did not fit these bars at all, hence the electrical tape shit nest. I was surprised to find had four AA batteries in a kitchen drawer. It is a pathetic light, vision-wise but I didn’t really need it to see - just wanted cars to be aware of me until the sun came up. New light needed time I guess. What’s the hot light of the moment? Any recos?

Btw, I think the Niterider battery just reached the end of its charging cycles. Last ride it only lasted an hour on low after full charge and it would usually average around five hours. This morning it had been charging overnight and wouldn’t even turn in. Maybe button problem, but I think it’s just done. It was a good run!

This week’s issue of The Stream was written in the style of Mad Magazine Fold In, but it only laid out correctly on the web/email version and broke completely on the Substack app, so you probably missed that experimental part of it. Link in bio and below 👇🙌

I do a deep dive video into the creation of this in this week’s episode of Behind the Streams - upgrade to paid to access and watch tomorrow! - but figured I’d share a rough (and shitty) layout of how it would work as a fold in. Then I turned it into a crane because the poem is called The Folding Crane (The Crane after the fold in). Because of course I did.
